Liaison Psychiatry and Physical Health
Dr Mascas has particular expertise in liaison psychiatry, the area of psychiatry concerned with the relationship between mental and physical health.
He has extensive experience assessing and treating psychiatric difficulties within acute hospital settings, including situations where psychological or psychiatric symptoms occur alongside physical illness.
This background allows him to consider the interaction between physical symptoms, medical conditions, medication, psychological wellbeing and mental health when developing an assessment and treatment plan.
Approach to Assessment and Treatment
Dr Mascas believes that effective psychiatric care begins with developing a detailed understanding of the individual rather than focusing on symptoms alone.
His assessments consider the person's:
- Current symptoms and concerns
- Previous mental health history
- Physical health
- Medication and previous treatment
- Psychological and emotional experiences
- Family and social circumstances
- Work and occupational functioning
- Strengths and protective factors
- Personal goals and preferences
He uses a biopsychosocial approach, integrating biological, psychological and social perspectives to develop a clear formulation and personalised treatment plan.
Depending on the individual's needs, recommendations may include medication, psychological therapy, lifestyle approaches, further assessment, or liaison with other healthcare professionals.
The aim is to help patients develop a clearer understanding of their difficulties, build on their existing strengths and work towards meaningful and sustainable improvements in their wellbeing.
Psychologically Informed Practice
Alongside his psychiatric training, Dr Mascas has undertaken additional professional training in psychological therapies.
He has completed training in:
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
